A Donation for
Posterity
In honor of the 75th
anniversary of the first Southern Pacific train into Tucson, a celebration
was held at the old SP Depot on Toole Avenue. A reenactment of that
first train was held with engine 1673 in the lead and free rides given to
all. Free one mile rides to the Pacific Fruit Express yard were given
to "children accompanied by adults and adults accompanied by children." Over
10,000 people turned out for the event. It was the last time Tucson
would ever hear a live steam whistle. |
